Aaron Ramsey is set to join UNAM Pumas in Liga MX, turning down interest from Saudi Arabia and the UAE. The 34-year-old midfielder has completed a medical and is due to agree a deal on Tuesday. Ramsey, formerly of Arsenal, is out of contract at Cardiff City — whom he rejoined in 2023 and where he was interim manager for the final three games of the 2024-25 Championship season. The Wales captain played 10 games for Cardiff last season and took his first managerial role on a short-term basis following the dismissal of Omer Riza. He guided his side to draws against Oxford United and West Bromwich Albion before overseeing a 4-2 defeat to Norwich City, which saw Cardiff finish bottom of the table and relegated to the third-tier of English football. Speaking upon taking the job in April, Ramsey played down his potential appointment as Cardiff’s full-time head coach with ambitions of continuing his playing career for the 2026 World Cup. “I am just taking these three games,” he said. “I’m still recovering from a hamstring operation, I’m still in the middle of rehab and I’m focused on getting back to full fitness. This is a role where it’s going to be an intense 10 days now then I can relax and get back into my rehab. I’m just looking at the next two.” Ramsey added: “There’s a lot to play for and that World Cup is a massive carrot being dangled.” In an 11-year spell, Ramsey made 369 appearances for Arsenal, recording 64 goals and 60 assists. He also played 70 times for Juventus and 34 games for Nice before returning to Cardiff, where rose through the academy in his early playing career. The midfielder has earned 86 caps for Wales, and was named captain of the national side following Gareth Bale’s retirement in March 2023.
